How do you design an app to log land surveying field work?

UI/UX design and prototyping Field data capture app Web admin for the office Step-by-step activity logging On-screen signature capture Approval flow and roles Supervisor dashboard Design system and handoff

MDT Ingenieros does topographic surveys. Its crews spend the day in the field and the office needs to know, precisely, what was done, how long it took and with whom. We designed the module the surveyor carries — and the web admin where everything they log lands.

Before, that record lived on paper: a slip filled out at the end of the day, signed by hand, carried back to the office and typed in again. Every link in that chain was a chance to lose an hour of work, or to bill it wrong.

A day in the field, captured in four steps

Logging an activity is a numbered path a surveyor can complete standing in the sun: describe the work, mark the start and end times, select the team members who were there, and sign. The signature step is the one that matters — the surveyor signs and the supervisor signs, so the record leaves the field already validated instead of waiting on a slip. The small decisions carry weight here: lunch is marked as overtime with a single checkbox, because that is exactly the argument nobody wants to have at the end of the month.

From the field to the office without retyping anything

The app covers assigned projects, the calendar of incomplete days, the day detail with total hours, the four-step capture, notifications and the approval status of each record — approved, not approved, in process. On the other side, the supervisor sees the summary that actually answers the question of the day: active projects, total team members, how many completed their schedule and how many are still pending. The web admin receives all of it, so what the surveyor logs in the field is what the office reads.

It was delivered as an interactive prototype on a design system built with the firm's identity: the sage green and the contour lines of a topographic map.
